Data Suggests Disposition Pays

September 10, 2013

A newly released study by Certified Angus Beef, Black Ink Basics, conducted at Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity proves docility makes a difference. The study collected data on 68,000 cattle from Iowa feedlots and used the six-point Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) disposition scoring system. The cattle were scored three to four times during feeding periods and then were grouped into three categories: docile (DC), restless (R) and nervous to very aggressive (NVA).

Highlights from the study

  • When Considering all the costs, docile calves netted more than $57 above their aggressive counterparts
  • Calves that were considered docile graded Premium Choice and Prime at more than double the rate of their nervous to very aggressive contemporaries
  • Aggressive calves also had lower feedlot gain and efficiency, resulting in a $34.74/head feeding loss
  • Favorable disposition equals higher postweaning calf value
  • Docile calves earned $13.11 more in quality grade premiums
  • Docile calves had more than double the Certified Angus Beef Brand acceptance rate over aggressive cattle
  • Aggressive cattle produced less desirable carcasses with 25% more dark cutter

Standout Daughters at Express Angus Ranch

June 26, 2013

Before BIF Conference I spent the morning at Express looking through a lot of daughters.

29AN1807 UPSHOT –  In just about every pen with bred heifers, yearlings, and weaned fall calves, UPSHOT is the leading sire group.  If you’re still not sure what kind of impact UPSHOT will have, I’d say Express’ confidence in the number of calves, not just he quality, goes a long way.  The females are broody and big ribbed with length. UPSHOT sons continue to offer high growth and performance with added muscle and stoutness.  I think UPSHOT will offer a little more frame than first anticipated but does it with lots of depth and rib shape – will add power, volume and performance to moderate females.

29AN1827 RITO 6EM3 – Sons have been crowd favorites in recent Express bull sales but the daughters are performing just as nice in the donor battery and as pairs.  The females have picture perfect udders and volume in moderate packages.  Soft ribbed and clean fronted with good structure, and raising calves with volume and performance, 6EM3 daughters have a lot of appeal and longevity to their future. For a double digit CED and negative BW bull, progeny are stout, heavy muscled with a lot of middle to them, no sacrifice on muscle and power here while maintaining a moderate and easy fleshing package.

HOOVER DAM Daughters in Production

April 11, 2013

HOOVER DAM is a customer favorite widely used for his combination of Calving Ease, Docility, Carcass Merit and $B index.  These EPDs backed by consistent, attractive, sound offspring with added style and muscle have lead HOOVER DAM to being one of the most popular sires in the breed.

HOOVER DAM’s ability to consistently sire high quality cattle is transmitting to his daughters.  With his first females in production, you can add nice, attractive, well balanced udders to his list of customer favorite qualities.

Landi McFarland, Hoover Angus, offers these comments on the daughters’ milking ability, “Personally I think they are average to slightly better on milk.  I think HOOVER DAM could be a +30 Milk bull after he adds more daughters in production to his data, but not upper 30’s.”

ABS Beef Product Manager, Doug Frank, adds this commentary, “In general, HOOVER DAM has been an extremely consistent sire, delivering outstanding calving ease and muscle in an attractive, complete phenotype.  His daughters are extremely docile and slick haired.”

Genetic Reserve Semen Auction – Starts Today!

November 10, 2012

** The ABS Genetic Reserve Semen Auction starts today at 11:00 a.m.**

**Stop by the ABS booth at the NAILE for latest updates and Genetic Reserve Auction reception to kickoff Monday following selection of Angus Bull Show Champions.**

ABS Global, Inc. is fortunate to have been involved in developing, proving and marketing some of the most influential sires in Angus history. The list includes bulls that started the performance movement in the 1970s to bulls that made performance mainstream and led the breed for registrations over the last two decades.

These industry greats have generally sold out quickly after their passing and have been off the open market for years. ABS has however, retained a special genetic reserve inventory on many of these bulls, typically setting aside 20-50 units for future validation and research. While we will continue to retain a portion of this inventory for those purposes, the decision has been made to share this unique and valuable resource with the industry.

This semen will be offered through a special internet auction hosted through the American Angus Association’s new internet auction service AngusTradingPost.com.  This initial auction will kick off with the Angus Association’s annual meeting and events during the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Kentucky.

Full details of the offering will be on AngusTradingPost.com.  In the mean time, you can get more information on the bulls selling on the ABS Global web site at Vintage Semen Auction | ABS Global, Inc.
